The first Island Community Plan (MICDA) proved invaluable as support for funding and demonstrating community cohesiveness to all levels of government. MICDA is promoting an inspirational community dinner on Saturday 3 November and a morning tea on Sunday 4 November. It would be good to have a strong MINCA presence and members are encouraged to attend this event. Invitation and details below. MAGNETIC ISLAND - 2013 AND BEYOND! Sat 3 Nov: An invitation to all, to attend an inspirational community dinner with 3 talented and entertaining speakers. Meet: Mark and Judy Evans - Paronella Park Mark and Judy are the rescuers and creators of Paronella Park, and in the process, they have won about every business and tourism award available. The Park's success is due to its guests receiving a not-to-be-forgotten experience resulting in word-of-mouth promotion - and you can't get any better than that! They employ more than 40 locals, and as such, have rejuvenated the village of Mena Creek near Innisfail. They have built an excellent rapport with local indigenous communities and actively support environmental projects. Being great speakers, they are eager to offer their thoughts about 'Community and Tourism Working Together to Reap Mutual Benefits' Peter Kenyon - Bank of IDEAS & The Centre for Small Town Development Over the last two decades Peter has worked with over 1000 communities throughout Australia and overseas seeking to facilitate fresh and creative ways that stimulate community and economic renewal. George pointed out geological and ecological features of the block while Christine spoke about the birds encountered along the way. A highlight of the walk occurred just as the group assembled - four magnificent Pacific Bazas (Aviceda subcristata members of the Hawk family) circled above, probably, as Christine explained, checking each other out for a bit of spring passion!
While out and about on Magnetic Island this weekend enjoying the glorious spring weather at all the events, don't forget to keep an eye out for those pesky myna birds. MINCA members Phil Stephenson and Peter Illidge are working with Townsville City Council and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service in a control program for those invasive and damaging birds. If you see any, please contact Peter Illidge on 4778 5982 or (0415 930 412) or by email at oceaniamc@bigpond.com
But the 2 metre x 3 metre skip was choc-a-block full by the time we closed the gates on Sunday."
MINCA was particularly pleased by the gratitude expressed by people dropping off electronic waste, with many seeing it as a godsend to their storage problems. “With this success, we will be looking to do a this at least once a year. If people know that there will be a clean-up, they will hang on to their no-longer-functioning IT bits and pieces, rather than sending them to landfill, were they take up huge amounts of room and contaminate the land” Peter said. The skip will be taken to Buyequip in Townsville for reusing and recycling of much of it as possible. MINCA thanks Roo and Kerrie from DTE Excavations for the use of their compound in Kelly Street. Wanting to do the right thing by not dumping electronic waste at the tip but fed up with storing all those bits of no-longer-functioning electronic office equipment? Help is at hand. MINCA has organised a free, two-day only electronic waste clean-up on the island. Between 8am and 3pm on Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 September bring your office-type electronic waste (computer monitors, keyboards, hard drives, laptops, modems, printers, cables, chargers, phones, fax machines, answering machines etc) to 64A Kelly St, Nelly Bay. There it will be placed in a skip that will then be transported to Buyequip in town who will reuse or recycle as much of it as is possible. Please note that we CANNOT accept TVs or white goods (fridges, washing machines etc). Nor can waste be accepted outside the set hours. We are grateful to Roo and Kerrie from DTE Excavations for the use of their space for this community clean-up of electronic waste. Spread the word but please remember – no TVs or white goods! Dear Cash for Containers Supporter,
NOW IS THE TIME TO SEND A LETTER TO YOUR PREMIER! After years of campaigning we have arrived at a very critical point. A few weeks from now (on 24 August) state and federal environment ministers will be meeting to decide on whether Australia should have a container deposits scheme. State cabinets will be deciding their government’s position within a matter of days. Your letter to your state Premier is needed to help give us the best chance. You can send one via our action page, or better still personally write a letter to the Premier and your local Member of Parliament. Many thanks, Jeff Angel National Convenor of the Boomerang Alliance of 21 environment groups 26 July 2012 www.boomerangalliance.org.au PS: You may have seen the beverage industry’s misleading advertising calling a deposit system a ‘tax’. We are up against well-funded opponents! Your donation will always help: Donate here * donations are received by the Total Environment Centre which is managing the campaign funds on our behalf |
