ACTIVITIES

Weed & Wine

One of MINCA's most popular and regular activities is our Weed & Wine which runs mostly through the drier months at the Bolger Bay Conservation Park and on Claude's Block It's usually a fortnightly event held from 3.30pm on Sundays.

The Weed 'n' Wine is when we go onto the land we have protected and work for a couple of hours to regenerate the native plants and ecology of the area. This usually involves removing weed species including: Guinea grass, streaked rattlepod, lantana, red Natal grass, stinking passionflower, hyptis and light blue snakeweed. The latter is the most widespread weed, but the orange lantana is the most aggressive invader and the weed that poses the greatest threat to the Park.

The Weed & Wine is a great way to learn about the biodiversity of the Island as well as a way to meet conservation-minded MINCA members and friends. As the sun goes down we gather for a quiet drink and nibbles and some great conversation.

MINCA members are reminded via email and by posts to our Facebook page when each Weed 'n' Wine is approaching and what is being planned.

We meet on the West Point Road about 130 meters beyond the Sunglow Avenue turn off. It's always a good idea to wear sun and bring insect protection, gloves, and long sleeves plus and something to drink and nibble. Members are alerted to upcoming Weed & Wine afternoons by email or on our Facebook page.
Weeding takes many forms and can suit most ages and levels of flexibility. Kids like to get involved with dramatic jobs like dragging off the lantana to stack with roots upright to dry and die while other species like white-eye or snake weed can be easily worked over by groups who enjoy the activity and a good chat at the same time.

After the weeding come drinks, sharing snacks and enjoyable conversation. It's a near perfect combo of rewarding work in a gorgeous setting with friendly interesting people. This is MINCA - on the ground.

MINCA Nature Walks

Once or twice a year MINCA conducts a nature walk for members and friends. They are very popular with the most recent, a walk to West Point, attracting over 90 walkers.

Along the way, various knowledgeable individuals and experts provide short commentary related to the landscape and ecology the walkers are passing through. Members will receive an email alert for upcoming walks and these events will also be promoted via the MINCA Facebook page.
