Thirty island households took advantage of MINCA’s e-waste clean-up over the weekend of 1 and 2 September, collectively dumping a skip-full of ‘dead’ computers, printers, scanners, cables, modems, laptops, hard drives.
Co-organiser of the clean-up Peter Jones told Magnetic Times “We weren’t sure how much we would collect. It could have been a couple of cables and a phone.
MINCA members John and Judy Chapman add more e-waste to the well-filled skip.
MINCA was particularly pleased by the gratitude expressed by people dropping off electronic waste, with many seeing it as a godsend to their storage problems.
“With this success, we will be looking to do a this at least once a year. If people know that there will be a clean-up, they will hang on to their no-longer-functioning IT bits and pieces, rather than sending them to landfill, were they take up huge amounts of room and contaminate the land” Peter said.
The skip will be taken to Buyequip in Townsville for reusing and recycling of much of it as possible.
MINCA thanks Roo and Kerrie from DTE Excavations for the use of their compound in Kelly Street.
