Magnetic Island 2013 and beyond

23/10/2012

The first Island Community Plan (MICDA) proved invaluable as support for funding and demonstrating community cohesiveness to all levels of government. MICDA is promoting an inspirational community dinner on Saturday 3 November and a morning tea on Sunday 4 November. It would be good to have a strong MINCA presence and members are encouraged to attend this event.

Invitation and details below.

MAGNETIC ISLAND - 2013 AND BEYOND!

Sat 3 Nov: An invitation to all, to attend an inspirational community dinner

with 3 talented and entertaining speakers.

Meet:

Mark and Judy Evans - Paronella Park

Mark and Judy are the rescuers and creators of Paronella Park, and in the process, they have won about every business and tourism award available. The Park's success is due to its guests receiving a not-to-be-forgotten experience resulting in word-of-mouth promotion - and you can't get any better than that!

They employ more than 40 locals, and as such, have rejuvenated the village of Mena Creek near Innisfail. They have built an excellent rapport with local indigenous communities and actively support environmental projects. Being great speakers, they are eager to offer their thoughts about 'Community and Tourism Working Together to Reap Mutual Benefits'

Peter Kenyon - Bank of IDEAS & The Centre for Small Town Development

Over the last two decades Peter has worked with over 1000 communities throughout Australia and overseas seeking to facilitate fresh and creative ways that stimulate community and economic renewal.

He is motivated by the desire to create healthy, caring, inclusive, sustainable and enterprising communities and local economies and is founder and Director of the Bank of I.D.E.A.S. Peter, always an inspiration, will present the outcomes of the 'New Magnetic Island Community Action Plan'

Venue: Water Garden Oasis Function Centre,

             Picnic Bay Hotel.

Date:   Saturday 3 November

Time:  6.30pm for 7.00pm

2 course dinner with complimentary drink on arrival. (Cash bar then open).

Ends with coffee and a sweet treat

Special diets catered for. (ring the number below) Tickets $50

On Sunday October 14th  2012, George, Penelope, Anne, Rose, Marjorie and Don worked into the late afternoon aligning and defining the fence with star pickets for the southern boundary.  The work was fun and good progress was made but completion is still a little way off due to the number of obstructions.  As the light failed we relocated to Cockle Bay for a glass of wine and nibblies on the sand.  A great end to a productive afternoon.

Interpretive walk through Bolger Bay Conservation Park

Over 20 locals and visitors joined George Hirst and Christine Corbett for an interpretive walk through the Bolger Bay Conservation Park as part of MINCA's contribution to the MI Bay Dayz festival on Saturday 8 September.
George pointed out geological and ecological features of the block while Christine spoke about the birds encountered along the way. A highlight of the walk occurred just as the group assembled - four magnificent Pacific Bazas (Aviceda subcristata members of the Hawk family) circled above, probably, as Christine explained, checking each other out for a bit of spring passion!
